Does your 7-year-old do laundry?

The best-est Valentine’s gift for mom? Waking up to find that one’s 7.5 year-old son successfully did a load of his OWN laundry (clothing) - without even telling me or asking for help. He amazes me.

Six months ago (or so) I taught The Kidlet how to wash a load of sheets/blankets so if he had an ‘accident’ at night (which he still does once or twice a week) he could be responsible (and therefore less likely to be embarrassed) for cleaning up. I felt it gave him the power to take care of things and be responsible for his own stuff. We have a new front-load washing machine with safety features (like a door lock that engages once ’start’ is pressed) and an easily accessible detergent cup, so I didn’t feel showing him what to do was beyond his capacity.

Plus I really, REALLY hate washing peed-on sheets that have sat there for half a day, stinking up the garage and making me want to puke. Instead, The Kidlet washes them immediately in the morning…

Since the age of 5 (4, maybe?) he’s been able to fold his own laundry and put it away/hang it up. He’s also a great ‘helper’ with carrying in and out my own laundry since I’m not supposed to lift more than 10 pounds. He’s done a lot of watching me do the normal laundry things - and apparently he’s figured out a lot more than I realized.

I’m just… amazed. This kid really and truly amazes me on a daily basis. OH, and I love him so!

That’s really cool. Kids are awesome. Can’t wait to have one myself one of these days.
I was doing laundry at his age, partially cause I was a bed wizzer myself.

LOL - I started doing some of my own laundry around the time I was 12… because having it “mixed” with my brothers and my dad’s underwear grossed me out… heheh.

Kris is now just getting off hormones that prevented her from having her period, related to her surgery. So hopefully we can try soon!
