Loss - Theirs, Ours, Mine

The reasons for “loss” are confusing and elusive to me. The loss of [the life of] anyone we love - young or old - is never something any of us wish to experience, yet death is the only inevitable part of life.

Inevitable, but seldom welcomed.

This family’s loss is so insurmountable the words escape me to offer comfort. I know nothing about them - nothing except to understand that their loss is gut-wrenching and seemingly senseless. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason, but I can’t help but scream out to the world an unanswerable question -

“WHY!?”

Our loss of Elaine on April 25th has also been confusing and blindingly deep. Some days I find myself almost forgetting, only to be reminded by some trivial little thing that stings my heart while my breath escapes and I choke on tears. I still wonder (although find it pointless to ask -)

“WHY!?”

My personal losses seem trivial in comparison. I have a hard time admitting that I have lost anything or anyone… I tend to downplay my own emotions in favor of others for whom I perceive as having “lost more”. On my own behalf, I no longer even remember to think -

“WHY!?”

Is this just part of life? Is losing so much, and seeing the loss other’s experience (in so many diverse ways) something we all have to suffer as human beings in order to BE human? If so, please, someone tell me -

“WHY!?”

I wish things to be easier. I wish it.

I am so shaken by the blog that you linked to. That is the second one this week that I have seen by a family of a baby that just drowned. I can’t even imagine.

P.S. Sorry it took me so long to reply, extended “vacations” can do that to someone’s blog response times!
