Little Buddha’s Spectacles

He didn’t inherit the gift of myopia from his father’s or my defective eyesight genes (even though we are both as blind as bats without our own optical enhancers) but he did enter into the near-sightedness masses, regardless.

One eye exam and a profound ‘eureka!’ mommy moment later… here’s to hoping he won’t be doing that annoying squinting thing anymore!

He hesitated exactly 1 millisecond to put on his new spectacles and even bragged that a girl at his school told him he looked ‘handsome’ wearing them. I must agree with the young miss.

Our little Buddha is seeing better already - He struck this pose spontaneously while we were taking pictures. Lucky for me I pulled off ONE shot before he giggled his way out of the frame.

This post was intended for Wordless Wednesday, but whoops - it’s Thursday! Enjoy.

Today, I’m a proud momma just in time for Wordless Wednesday

When K1 saw this post, he pointed out that the blurb below the highlighed part makes it seem as if my son might have a reading deficiency! Ack!  The statement is actually just something that is posted on each student’s report card, and reads “As stated in the FL state statutes, if a student’s reading deficiency is not remediated by the end of Grade 3, the student must be retained unless he or she is exempt from mandatory retention for good cause.

In fact, my son always scores above average in reading and comprehension.  On his final report (the part of the picture you can’t even see) it says that his Reading Common Assessment for March/April should be >=17, and his score is 23.

Woah! 6 Miles!

Every year my son’s elementary school holds a “Jog-a-Thon” to help raise money to buy supplies for the school, and provide a slush fund for students who’s families don’t have the means to buy things like school uniforms. A enjoys this annual event for two reasons: 1) A loves to run, and 2) he loves to RUN!

Yes, and we do talk about the importance of helping others, but to a 7-year-old it’s really more about the running (and hey, if he can hand someone a check at the same time, all the more fun!)

A month before the Jog-A-Thon, A brings home a sign-up sheet for pledges. Since I feel he’s still too young to go door-to-door asking for sponsors (especially in our neighborhood where there are signs everywhere that say ‘no solicitation’) I usually just write him a check - this year we contributed about $120.

Today he proudly brought home his trophy (which all participants get) to show me that…

…this year he ran twice as far as last year… 6.1 miles to his 3.2 in first grade.

Whoa! I can’t even run ONE mile!!
